Hebrews: “God’s Chosen High Priest”

Hebrews 5:1-10

August 28, 2022

I. Our sin and our need for a high priest

The high priest was required to:

1. Understand his role before God

2. Have compassion for the people

3. Realize his own need

II. God appointed Jesus as our High Priest

Jesus was appointed High Priest because:

1. He was God's Son

2. His priesthood was established by God

III. Jesus is our only hope for eternal salvation

Salvation is a one time event, paid for with a single sacrifice

Salvation is eternal and not something that can be lost

Salvation is revealed through our obedience

Salvation is God's greatest expression of His grace and mercy

LET’S GO DEEPER:

1. What was the purpose of Old Testament priests? In what ways did Jesus fulfill these duties in his service as high priest of the people?

2. Why was the divine appointment of the high priest significant?

3. How does Jesus’s priesthood relate to Melchizedek’s in this regard, and what does it tell us about God’s purposes?

4. Why does the author compare Jesus to Melchizedek?

5. How do Jesus’s prayers and supplications during his earthly life show his solidarity with human beings?
